Standing Committees

 

These committees perform a continuing function as approved by the general PTA body, and exist to enable the PTA to support educational enrichment for all of the students at Pope PTA. These committee chairs are VOTING BOARD MEMBERS of Pope PTA.

 

Volunteer Coordinator- Jessica Walker

 

Legislative Chair - This committee is our connection to the world of policy making at the neighborhood, city, county, state and federal levels. The committee works with the PTA Board to inform and educate the general membership regarding education and children’s welfare issues. Your job could include representing Pope Elementary PTA before the Puyallup PTA Council meetings or the State Legislature; or you could help research and report to our school on any legislation, initiatives or referendum that would affect children and/or schools.

Special Committees

 

These committees are created as the need arises to carry out a specific task. When the task is complete the committee is done. The chairpersons of these committees are not voting board members, but must be a member of the PTA.

 

Fundraising – Coordinates Fundraising efforts for PTA budget

Reflections – This is the national arts program sponsored by the National PTA. Duties include advertising and creating incentives for kids to participate, to collect the artwork and submit it to the local PTA unit for judging. This job starts in October and is over in January.

Popcorn Chair – The “Popcorn People” are the envy of us all! On teacher selected Fridays, we fill the halls with the delicious aroma of freshly popped popcorn. The hosting teacher is responsible for arranging volunteers for these dates. Volunteers pop the corn, bag the corn, and get rewarding smiles as they sell the delicious bags of popcorn to the kids.  This is a yearlong commitment. The chair is responsible for ordering the supplies and the maintenance of the popcorn machine.

Harvest Carnival -The air is cool, the leaves have changed and it’s time to celebrate the bounty of life and our great school community! Join the committee and add your special touch to this great family event. Students are allowed to dress in costume if they choose! Come enjoy the fun with all the creatures of Pope Elementary!

Spring Book Fair – An exciting Scholastic event lasting a week in the fall and in the spring, when we have our very own bookstore. The chair works with volunteers to bring fabulous books to our children. Volunteers are needed for cashiering, set up and take down, keeping books organized and assisting students. All volunteers for this event MUST be PTA members.

Bingo Night – One of Pope PTA’s most exciting events of the year! We plan a great night of BINGO and prizes!  The chairs duties will include but not limited to; soliciting prizes from the community, working with the Volunteer Coordinator and the PTA President as well as set up and break down of the event. This is a super fun community event as almost all Thunderbird families attend!

Tacoma Rainiers Night – Coordinates with the PTA Board and Tacoma Rainiers to plan a family night.

WATCH D.O.G.S. - WATCH D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students) is an innovative father involvement, educational initiative of the National Center for Fathering. The goals of a WATCH D.O.G.S. program are to provide positive male role models for the students, demonstrating by their presence that education is important and to provide extra sets of eyes and ears to enhance school security and reduce bullying. Volunteers come in on their schedule and are a vital role in our Thunderbirds day!

Yearbook – We work with Treering.com, our publisher, to put together our school yearbook. This is a service provided by Pope PTA and is a yearlong commitment.

Spirit Gear – Work with the Pope PTA Board of Directors to provide fun Pope PTA merchandise to our awesome students. This spirit gear is sold at various Pope PTA events. Great job for the retailer at heart!

Box Tops for Education - We have a drop off bin in the main hallway for General Mills Box Tops and Campbell’s Labels for education. This committee collects the box tops (please check first to make sure yours have not EXPIRED), and mails them to the appropriate company, who then returns a percentage to Pope PTA! They also are responsible for encouraging contests throughout the school year, by publicizing this program!

Skate Night – Three times a year we rally up our super talented Pope families and head out to Tiffany’s Skate! It’s a night for family fun! The chair is responsible for purchasing (and submitting reimbursement form) for prizes, bringing papers and pens for students to enter the drawings, and delivering funds to the Pope PTA Treasurer. This chair MUST be a PTA Member.

Swim Night –Plan a family swim night at Rogers Aquatic Center.

Movie Night – Who doesn’t love watching a movie with your friends? Three to Four times a year we purchase newly released DVD’s to show (within our licensing) and have a great time! At the end of the event, we draw a name for one of our lucky Pope students to take home the DVD that evening! We also offer concessions! If you are interested in a low key chair position, this is a great one!

Holiday Shop – Is a great activity for each child to have an opportunity to purchase a gift for their family during the holidays! This will run during the month of December and is a service to our awesome students.

Student Store – This event runs generally once or twice a month on Thursdays throughout the school year! This is held during first recess! 2 helpers per Thursday is needed! We would love to see your sales skills shine!!

Boohoo – Woohoo Breakfast for Kinder Parents – Some cheer, some tear.. Pope PTA provides coffee and tissues as well as celebratory noise makers! This is also an opportunity for other kinder families to bond! This event is held on the first day of Kindergarten, and would be best chaired by a 1st through 6th grade parent/guardian volunteer!

SBAC Snacks – Testing time can be hard on anyone especially if you have a “Rumbly in your Tumbly”! Pope PTA provides healthy snack options to our students during the Smarter Balanced Assessment testing time!  This event can easily be chaired by one person with a helper to deliver these wonderfully delicious snack to class!

Ice Cream Social  - An event at the beginning of the school year to inform PTA members and the community of volunteer opportunities.  Students arrive with their parents/guardians to visit PTA event tables where they receive information regarding that PTA event and a stamp for their pass. Once families have visited each table, students turn their passes in for ice cream and toppings.

Pastries With Parents- Students and their parents/guardians are invited to enjoy a pastry and beverage before school starts. Chair responsibilities include but not limited to : works with janitor to arrange set up/clean up, works with volunteer coordinator if volunteers are needed, designs a flyer and promotes the event, solicits and/ or purchases pastries and beverages (reimbursable expense), decorates the gym, and meets with the music teacher to arrange a performance from the Thunderbird choir (if desired).

Penny Challenge- Spring PTA fundraising opportunity that pits each grade against each other to win a prize? During lunch recess students bring change to school and deposit it into containers labeled by grade. Pennies and paper currency ADD points and silver coins SUBTRACT points, so the students put those into other grades to sabotage them!!! The goal is to be the grade with the MOST POINTS by the end of the week to win a prize.

Your talents and efforts are valuable and are needed to help provide an exciting, family-fun school year! Working together we can best utilize your talents anduse them to continue to make Pope Elementary PTA the best it can be!
